About the North West Province
It wouldn’t be out of line to refer to the North West Province as the archaeological capital of South Africa. With the Cradle of Humankind as its crown, the artifacts of our distant ancestors are perfectly preserved and presented here.
The striking beauty of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range offers a glimpse into a prehistoric time, where creatures that far surpass human power inhabited the grasslands, dining on the produce of scattered trees and perhaps some of the land’s smaller creatures, grazing on the banks of the Vaal River.
Human Heritage and Natural Wonders in the North West
Nature’s opulence is on full display in the North West Province. Generous fields of golden maize decorate the landscape, with bright stretches of sunflowers reaching up against the horizon.
A visit to the World Heritage Site at Sterkfontein Caves will have you learning about our ancient ancestors in otherworldly limestone caves, where nearly innumerable noteworthy fossils have been excavated. Survey dusty plains stretching as far as the eye can see and encounter the country’s ever-impressive Big 5 strutting their stuff at the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a human history this hands-on elsewhere. With plenty of edu-tainment options available to add to your itinerary, a visit to the Platinum Province is a reset and refresh, every time.
