About Gauteng
The name Gauteng is the Sotho word for “Gold”, which is aptly named considering Johannesburg is one of the greatest Gold producing regions in the world.
Although highly urbanised, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, yet contains the country’s largest city, Johannesburg, as well as South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria. Other large well known areas in Gauteng include Soweto, Midrand and Vanderbijlpark.
What to do in Gauteng
Although Gauteng province is dominated by the urban areas of Johannesburg and Pretoria, it has several nature reserves, botanical gardens, and other conservation sites.
Gauteng’s main attraction is the business, but it has a few gems, such as museums, galleries, and historical battlefields. Gauteng is also an entertainment playground offering world-class restaurants, shebeens, hotels, shopping malls, and music venues.
