The route will take you along 97 kilometers of breathtaking Joburg terrain to enjoy for a day, starting at FNB Stadium! Cycle past Joburg’s most prominent sights through usually busy roads and discover the city’s rich diversity from a unique perspective.
The start/finish location at FNB Stadium provides easy access and safe parking. This magnificent venue is in the heart of Johannesburg, making it an excellent platform to discover the vast city and suburban areas.
Cyclists traveling from the FNB Stadium can go out onto the Soweto Expressway for a brief loop, pass the well-known Joburg gold mine dumps on their journey, and hug Soweto before returning to Main Reef Road.
The scenery becomes even more spectacular as the route goes on to the M1 S (cycling north). The backmarkers will be able to see the racing categories fighting for place as they race towards the finish for 3 kilometers. Riders will next join the M1, a fast series of undulating downhills that leads to Woodmead.
You’ll go up to Kyalami for an unusual chance to zip around the world-renowned circuit before turning onto Main Road. On this stretch of road, riders climb up Main Road to Witkoppen Road, where the King/Queen of the Mountain will be decided.
The last part of the route through suburban Joburg is somewhat hilly, but the vistas of well-kept tree-lined avenues are well worth the climb.
After crossing the Nelson Mandela Bridge, you’ll go back onto the M1 and pass Gold Reef City on your right. At this time, you will get views of the FNB Stadium, which is the final section of your thrilling journey. The conclusion of the race will be on Nasrec Road, where you will be escorted into FNB stadium for a hero’s welcome and wonderful hospitality.
